There persists a long-standing misconception that universities function as isolated ivory towers, disconnected from the realities and challenges of the world beyond their campuses. However, the University of Tennessee System is steadfastly committed to dispelling this myth by focusing on equipping our students with the skills they need to meet the demands of employers today and tomorrow.

The University of Tennessee averages approximately 1,140 veterans, service members, dependents and reservists who serve as students on our campuses across the state. And, our efforts around educating military-affiliated students are getting noticed on a national level.
I am convinced, more so than ever, that there is no better time in the University of Tennessee’s history than now. As I look back on the last year, I am encouraged by all that has been accomplished and energized about what’s to come.

Opioids and addiction are decimating families and communities across our state. During the past five years, I’ve traveled to nearly every town in every county, and everywhere I turn lives are being destroyed.
During the last six months, I have had the opportunity to listen and learn from hundreds of UT stakeholders, from students to faculty to staff, legislators to alumni, and from many higher education leaders around the country. The impact we are making in every corner of the state, and literally around the world, is immeasurable. I am honored and humbled to serve.
