Margie Nichols

Margie Nichols joined the University of Tennessee in November 2007 as chief of staff to President John Petersen. In this role, she oversees organization and follow-up as part of the president’s senior staff.

Prior to coming to UT, Nichols served as senior director of communications and government relations for Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam where her primary responsibilities included internal and external communication for the city. Nichols has 26 years of experience in television news, including an eight-year stint as news director at WBIR-TV in Knoxville, as well as positions with stations in Nashville and Memphis.

Her work in broadcasting garnered several awards, including a 1987 Peabody Award, a 1986 Emmy Award for Investigative Reporting, a 1987 George Polk Award for Local Television Reporting, and various local and regional awards.

She is past president of the Executive Women's Association and is a member of the UT National Alumni Association Board of Governors Executive Committee. She is a 1991 graduate of Leadership Knoxville, and previously served as chair of the UT Knoxville Chancellor's Associates.

Nichols is a University of Tennessee alumnus, with a bachelor of arts degree, magna cum laude, in English from UT Martin.
