Re: Staff Performance Reviews

One of the most important responsibilities of a supervisor is the regular review of staff performance. UT Policy HR0129, Performance Review, stresses the importance of the process and specifies that the object of the annual performance review is to provide all regular university employees and their supervisors an opportunity to:

  • discuss the employee's job performance,
  • set goals for professional development, and
  • establish objectives for contributing to the department's mission.

Annual performance evaluations are important in providing dialogue about expectations and accomplishments and, when raises or bonuses are considered and funded, they are used in merit and eligibility determinations.

UT system employees with supervisory responsibility shall complete the performance review process during the next two months. Written performance reviews must be submitted to the UT Human Resource Office (230 Conference Center Building, Knoxville, TN  37996-4125) no later than April 30, 2011. All staff are required to participate in performance reviews.

A number of resources are available to assist supervisors with conducting the review.  For more information, I urge you to contact Employee and Organizational Development at 865-974-6657 or access the training website at:

http://uthr.admin.utk.edu/TandD/Management_Supervision.shtml.

To request department-specific training, please call 865-946-8847 and request an employee relations specialist to meet with your department. You also may access information online about performance reviews at:

Thank you for your participation in this important process. We will be monitoring the results to assure that every system-level employee participates in a performance review.
